ec·dy·sis

/ˈekdəsəs/

noun

The process of shedding the old skin (in reptiles) or casting off the outer cuticle (in insects and other arthropods).

ECDYSIS

Ecdysis is more than just a name—it's a symbol of transformation and personal growth. The term comes from biology and describes the moment when an organism sheds its outer layer, like a snake shedding its skin, to make room for what's next. What's revealed underneath is renewed, stronger, and ready to move forward.

This idea resonates deeply with us. Growth isn't always comfortable, but it's necessary. Ecdysis represents the struggle, patience, and intention required to evolve—physically, mentally, and personally. It's about shedding the old and stepping into something better.

Every cut, a fresh start.

FOUNDER · COURTNEY LAYNE

Courtney Layne’s path to barbering began in 2003, when a chance conversation at a Southern California coffee shop led her to the chair. More than two decades later, she holds barber, cosmetology, and instructor licenses, and has spent years teaching new barbers the craft alongside her own work behind the chair.

In December 2023, Courtney opened the doors of Ecdysis Barbershop — named for a snake shedding its skin, a nod to transformation and renewal. Today, as founder and master barber, she leads a shop that serves the community, trains the next generation of barbers, and treats every client like a friend.

BARBERING

Barber-Surgeons

The craft of barbering is a centuries-old tradition that has evolved over time. In its early days, barbers were also surgeons, dentists, and pharmacists, performing medical procedures including bloodletting and tooth extraction. As medicine advanced, barbers began to focus more on haircutting and shaving.

The Pole & The Staff

At Ecdysis, we honor these barber roots. Our logo pays homage to this history, inspired by the barber pole's connection to the Staff of Hermes and the Rod of Asclepius—symbols with connections to healing, alchemy, trade, and wisdom.

A Community Sanctuary

The barbershop has always been more than just a place for haircuts—it's a community sanctuary. We take pride in our work and our roles as confidants and friends, and we strive to honor and recreate the traditional barbershop culture here in Tulsa.
